Canada's Bell Media has picked up broadcast rights for the compelling drama (8 x 60') to air on Space and is expected to make its Canadian debut in autumn. The series described as "best drama of the year" by The Sunday Times will also kick off on SBS in Australia end of 2013.
Meanwhile, Universal Pictures (UK), the home entertainment division of Universal Pictures, released Series 1 on DVD on September 9th 2013.
The Returned (aka Rebound) has been a huge hit in France where it is known as Les Revenants and became the highest-rated original drama of all time on CANAL+. In the UK, it was snapped up by Channel 4 (C4) and was the first subtitled drama they had acquired in 20 years. Rechristened The Returned in the UK, the series launched on C4 in June with rave reviews and became the highest rated subtitled drama in the UK since 2006, attracting an average audience of 1.8 million viewers in its prime time slot.
Today's announcement follows the recent news that Zodiak Rights has secured broadcast agreements for The Returned (aka Rebound) in territories including the USA (Sundance Channel, Music Box), UK (Channel 4) French Canada (Radio-Canada and tou.tv), Sweden (SVT), Israël (Hot), Turkey (Sinema TV), New Zealand (Rialto), Hungary (Viasat) and Iceland (Ruv).
Marc Nowak, General Manager Zodiak Rights (Paris), comments: "Rebound is one of those outstanding series with a French twist that serve up the most common themes in a unique and unexpected way. Its ratings successes have paved the way for broadcasters to look to us for more exciting European drama."
The Returned (aka Rebound) is a stylish take on the supernatural genre that combines taut mystery with rich character-led drama. In a small Alpine village, in the shadow of a vast dam, a small group of men, women and children find themselves in a state of confusion, trying to return to their homes. What they do not yet know is that they have been dead for several years, and no-one is expecting them back. This strikingly atmospheric supernatural thriller keeps the audience guessing as we see those returning from beyond the grave, determined to reclaim their places in the world of the living, and the living who are thrown into a state of turmoil by the return of friends and relatives who don't understand that time has moved on. Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders which bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past. This is a homecoming like no other
Zodiak Rights owns worldwide distribution rights to the series.
