Filming begins for season 2 of epic drama Versailles
Following the worldwide success of Season 1, filming for the second season of Versailles has commenced in Paris. Once again, the series is being co-produced by Capa Drama, Zodiak Fiction, Capa Incendo and Canal+. Filming is scheduled to be complete by mid-July.
Writing the Season 2 episodes began more than six months ago, and is continuing to be led by British showrunners David Wolstencroft and Simon Mirren. Other writers include Andrew Bampfield and Tim Loane. The first episodes of the series will be directed by Thomas Vincent (The Tunnel, Borgia).
George Blagden and Alexander Vlahos return to their leading roles starring as Louis XIV and as Monsieur, the King's brother. Other recurring cast members for Season 2 include Tygh Runyan, Stuart Bowman, Anna Brewster, Evan Williams, Elisa Lasowski, Lizzie Brocheré, Maddison Jaizani and Steve Cumyn.
The year is now 1671. King Louis XIV has completed the first phase of his beloved project, building the most beautiful palace in Europe, away from Paris, where he will effectively lock up the nobility to exercise absolute control over them. Unexpectedly, his project turns against him as Versailles is riddled with corruption, as this newly created community of courtesans desperately jostles for a position close to the Sun King. Behind the rules of etiquette imposed on the court, they dream of elevating their social status, wealth and power. Any and all means of doing so are utilized which inevitably results in the deterioration of morality and the spread of devious, dangerous and poisonous behaviour...
Blinded by his passion for Montespan, Louis refuses to listen to the advice of the church and his closest advisors. As delusion and paranoia set in the greatest enemy that stands before Louis is no longer the nobility, nor William d'Orange of the Netherlands, it is God who now threatens the Sun King.
Versailles is an ambitious period drama created by Simon Mirren (Without a Trace and Criminal Minds) and David Wolstencroft (MI-5 and The Escape Artist) who are executive producers of the series along with Claude Chelli (Braquo), Anne Thomopoulos (Rome, The Borgias and Camelot) and Jean Bureau. Versailles Series 1 comes to BBC Two in the UK later this year.
Zodiak Rights holds world distribution rights to the series excluding Canada, where it is sold by Incendo.
